About Panchakarma

Panchakarma as the name suggests is a power pack of five rejuvenating and detoxifying therapies. Panchakarma treatments are well known for its preventive, curative and rejuvenation action. It is a method of cleansing the body of all the unwanted waste after lubricating it. The panchakarma also strengthen the overall immunity systems and recharge the body’s energy and nutrition channel. It is a five karmas or processes according to Ayurveda. They are vamana (Emesis) , Virechana (Purgation), / Vasti (enema), Nasya (Instillation of medicine through nostrils) and Raktamokshana.

First step of any ayurvedic treatment is a thorough examination and diagnosis by an ayurvedic practitioner. Panachakarma rebalances the doshas, bringing them back to equilibrium and the individual back to good health.

Abhyanga

Snehanam (Oleation therapy) / Abhyanga

Is a form of ayurvedic medicine that involve massage of the body with large amounts of warm oil. The oil is often pre-medicated with herbs for specific conditions. It can be done as part of the steps of panchakarma in the first stage, Purva karma. / Snehahanam is an oil therapy which is a first treatment where patients are given oil massages “Abhyanga”. It is a full body massage and Shirodhaya is forehead massage. They are fed dietary oils to lubricate the digestive tract, and are sometimes administered oil enemas. Many times abhyanga is performed by two or more massage therapists working in synchronization but it can also by done by oneself. (Individual Body massage )

Swedanam (Steam therapy)

Swedanam (Steam therapy)

The word Swedana is derived from the Sanskrit word, meaning to sweat or perspire. Swedana karma is a group of procedures used to induce sweating. Swedana helps in relieving stiffness, cold, heaviness in the body and produces sweat. Swedana also refers to interna excreta of the body. Swedana therap has several benefits as it purifies tissue and eliminates toxins, helps in detoxifying kidneys, liver and respiration system, and improves circulation, relives stiffness, improves digestion, and removes blockage of strotas if any.

Vamanam (Vomiting)

Vamanam (Vomiting)

Vamana is one of the five pradhana karmas of panchakarma which is used in treating kaphaj disorders. It is a therapeutic emesis technique to cleanse axcess kapha dosha accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract which causes repeated bronchitis, colds, coughs or asthama.

Virechanam (Purging)

Virechanam (Purging)

It is a medicated purification therapy done for treating gastrointestinal dysfunctions, skin diseases and other issues associated with excess pitta dosha in the body. It helps root out joint disorders, chronic fever, headaches, asthma, diabetes, skin disorders, digestive disorders, gynecological disorders. Virechana is one of the panchakarma therapies wherein purgation is induced by drugs and it specifically aims at the elimination of excessive pitta dosha from the body. Normally, after Virechanakarma, patient does not complain of having any untoward like those present after diarrhea due to dehydration.

It involves the administration of medicated oil /herbal decoctions through rectum. Basti is often called as the mother of all panchakarma treatments since it flushes out the toxins from all the three doshas , vata , pitta and kapha through the colon. It relived digestive issues, chronic fever, Irritable owl syndrome, obesity, Kidney stones, heart pains, bachache. Nirooha, anuvasana and uttaravasthi form the basic types of basti.
